So I was watching the abridged series for SAO and noticed something odd in Ep 4 so I watched the original series once more and caught this gem, wondering how many people realize Kirito wasn't the first and only dual welder in the series

I think that people may dual wield stuff in Sword Art Online. But wont get the special attacks (sword skills) accompanied by the act of dual wielding. That's the reason why we don't see anybody doing it in the anime- it was impractical for the most part.

Sure it would double the usual offense, but the drawbacks were that you had to get used survive by dodging or parrying (which is harder than just raising your shield) and that there were no new sword skills to save you when you need it most (take into account that sword skills are system assisted, making you hit faster, stronger and that in some, causes special effects that could be critical in a duel to the death).

Say you want weapons in both hands to double the damage output, like two axes guy here in the pic.

The guy may equip them and swing them about if that's his style. But when he wants the sword skill; he can only activate those under the one handed axe category, activated only when the guy gets into a stance specific to the skill. If he had done so, the skill would still only work only on one of the axes for that particular skill.

It kinda makes sense for the guy since the purpose of the group was an ambush. He might as well go all out with the offense since they had planned on harassing someone of a lower level- in this case was Silica. Or, he might just be rediculously confident of having a high VIT stat.

Just my two cents.
